Problem

Silicon-based solar panels are prevalent in the global market, but they have inherent limitations in converting the full spectrum of sunlight into electricity. The ability of a photovoltaic device to convert sunlight into electricity determines its efficiency. Currently, solar panels do not fully utilize the available solar spectrum, resulting in suboptimal energy conversion.

Solution

The Nanomnia team has developed an advanced solar cell prototype that incorporates luminescent nanomaterials capable of capturing a larger portion of solar energy and efficiently channeling it to silicon, thereby improving photoconversion. This innovation makes it possible to overcome the traditional limitations of silicon solar cells and significantly increase energy efficiency. The advantages of our solution are:

  • Increased Efficiency: The prototype demonstrated a 2.9 percent increase in efficiency compared to conventional photovoltaic cells without nanomaterials. This improvement is significant in the context of solar power generation, where every fraction of a percent contributes to an increase in energy produced and a reduction in cost per watt.
  • Material Stability: The nanomaterials used are designed to be extremely stable, making them suitable for integration into existing commercial devices or for innovative applications such as photovoltaic windows.
  • Energy Transfer Properties: The exceptional energy transfer properties of the nanomaterials enable more efficient capture and utilization of solar energy, optimizing the energy output of the device.

Readiness

The prototype is currently at a TRL 5 level of development, with laboratory tests having validated efficiency improvements using a solar simulator under standard conditions. The patent is being tested under real-world conditions. Nanomnia is collaborating with companies that supply additives to solar cell manufacturers and is looking for additional partners interested in a test phase of the technology that is preparatory to initiating a licensing relationship.
